1: Purpose of this document

2: COHOWeb Data Selector Errors

• E-mail address was not specified. COHOWeb tracks data request activity based on the user's e-mail address. Also, the e-mail address is used to create a subdirectory in the NSSDC's "anonymous" FTP site for data delivery. This subdirectory is named using the user's name found in the e-mail address.
• E-mail address was not recognized as a valid Internet address. The user e-mail address must be an Internet address of the form username@host.domain. For example, mathews@nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov is a valid Internet e-mail address. If you have an Internet address that isn't recognized as valid then please tell us about it.

• A spacecraft must be selected in order to plot or retrieve data.
• If a spacecraft was selected then your client WWW browser might have transmitted an incorrect <SELECT> HTML key=value pair to server, which happens with some browsers such as WinMosaic/Version 2.0 (ALPHA 2) and Lynx 2.3.0 BETA. You should check to see if a newer version of your browser is available and upgrade. If this is the case then you can also try COHOWeb again from another browser such as Netscape or Internet Explorer.

COHOWeb Data Selector Error: FATAL SERVER ERROR

• System errors are usually caused by situations beyond the immediate control of the user or developers. These errors are trapped and automatically mailed to the COHOWeb developer, so the user need not notify the developers. Usually, trying again a little later should resolve the problem. If the problem persists after a few days, the developers should be notified of the problem. System problems may occur due (but not limited) to the following causes:
  • Server shut down due to regular maintenance, system upgrade, or power failure.
  • Incompatibility between httpd server and user WWW client.
  • Developers are re-configuring or updating COHOWeb.
  • Access permission denied.
  • Insufficient disk space.
  • Disk operation error.
  • Required file renamed, moved, or deleted.
  • Hardware error.

3: COHOWeb Data Explorer Errors

• Start or stop dates not specified. A start and stop date must be specified to generate a plot.

• The specified time range is invalid. The dates must be of the form YYDDD or YYMMDD.

  YYDDD
  	YY  = 2-digit year (73,74,75,...)
  	DDD = 3-digit day of year number (001-366)
  
  YYMMDD
  	YY = 2-digit year (73,74,75,...)
  	MM = 2-digit month (Jan=01, Feb=02, ..., Dec=12)
  	DD = 2-digit day number (01-31)
  

  For example, January 1, 1994 equals 94001 in YYDDD format and 940101 in YYMMDD format.

• The start or stop dates are out of range. Please ensure that the dates fall within the valid range for selected spacecraft, which is listed next to the date input boxes and also in the section Identification of Available Data.

COHOWeb Data Explorer Error: PLOT RESTRICTED TO N DAYS

• COHOWeb plots are limited to N days for a single plot period, where N is a user defined value in the max days/panel field. For inline GIF images, more plots for next N days of data is provided as hyperlinks back to the Data Explorer with the "More" button. However, when spawning an external image viewer or creating a PostScript file there is no mechanism to provide a hyperlink (since no HTML document is produced -- only GIF or PS), so these plots are restricted to N days, but this value can be changed on the form. Note: To generate a plot for a single day, enter the same start and stop date.

COHOWeb Data Explorer Error: INVALID VARIABLE SELECTION

• No variables specified to plot or retrieve. At least one variable (e.g. Plasma temperature) must be selected from the available list.

• User is restricted to a maximum of six variables per plot page (for plotting only). The plot page is divided into panels - one for each of the selected variables. Beyond six panels the scaling of the y-axis becomes too small to distinguish the labels or much of the data. If you want more than six plots displayed at the same time then select the external image option to display the plot in an image viewer (assuming your browser is setup to display images in a helper application). Alternatively, you can select "New Window" or "New Web Browser" from your WWW browser to create multiple Data Explorer windows and generate a new plot in each of the windows.

• One or more of the advanced plotting options is invalid.

• Server cannot process "form" input. The POST format is not recognized as valid. There might be an incompatibility between the httpd server and the user client. Please notify the developers with the following information:
  • User name and Internet e-mail address.
  • Name and version number of WWW browser used to access COHOWeb.
  • The type of computer and operating system used.
  • The exact steps taken for the error to occur.

COHOWeb Data Explorer Error: FATAL SERVER ERROR

COHOWeb Feedback Error: MISSING INPUT

• The user must enter a name, an e-mail address, a subject, and some text in the comment box.

• The e-mail handler cannot process "form" input. This may occur due (but not limited) to the following causes:
  • Server shut down due to regular maintenance, system upgrade, or power failure.
  • Developers are re-configuring or updating COHOWeb.
  • Required file renamed, moved, or deleted.
  • Access permission denied.
  • Incompatibility between httpd server and user WWW client.
  • Insufficient disk space.
  • Disk operation error.
  • Hardware error.

• Your name and organization.
• Name and version number of client WWW browser used to access COHOWeb.
• The type of computer and operating system used.
• The exact steps taken for the error to occur.
